Stop work procedure
The company will establish within its Stop Work Authority program the general steps are as follows:
• Stop work. When an unsafe action or situation is observed, work is stopped immediately.
• Notify affected personnel and supervisor. Provide a clear explanation of the reason why the work was stopped. Take immediate action to make the area safe.
• Investigate the reason why the work was stopped. Review and discuss the situation and reach an agreement on the stop work action.
• Correct the unsafe behavior or situation. Hazards must be eliminated before work resumes. Stop Work Authority procedures must cover everyone at the work location or jobsite, including employees, contractors, subcontractors, and visitors.
• Resume work. After corrective actions are completed, all affected personnel must be notified that work may continue.
• Monitor and follow up. Although immediate corrections may have eliminated the risk, additional actions can be implemented to prevent future occurrences. Preventive actions may include monitoring activities, root cause analysis, and additional training.
The use of stop-work authority should be discussed in all pre-job planning and in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
If an unsafe condition or act is observed
• Take immediate action by STOPPING WORK.
• Individuals receiving a stop-work notice must comply with that order immediately.
• Notify the work supervisor immediately.
• The work supervisor is responsible for ensuring that work is stopped in an orderly and safe manner.
• Discuss and/or determine corrective measures with all involved.
• Review and/or revise the JSA as necessary.
